How To: Butterflies
Updated: Sep 18, 2019
How to make a butterfly. A lot of weavers may already know how to do this technique - but its such a great help - I'm putting it out there for those who have never seen it before.
This is a handy way of tying up lose ends and scraps of random yarn. It allows you to quickly pass small bits of weft through the shed of your loom without creating a huge tangled mess. Butterflies are often used by tapestry weavers because switching between multiple colors frequently can become problematic quickly.
I don't often create tapestries - but anytime I end up with little bits of yarn that I want to save for later, butterflies are a good way to save them without leaving everything in a tangled ball.

I hope this collection of images showcases clearly how to make a butterfly and that it is a helpful resource for anyone who is curious.
Best,
